*PK-1st: 50% Classwork & 50% Tests
*2nd-5th: 50% Classwork/Homework, 20% Tests/Quizzes, 10% Six Weeks Tests, & 20% Projects/Products
* In December and May, students are given an assessment based on knowledge attained from 1st six weeks of school until assessment date. Attained grade in May is calculated in the overall semester grade.
Field Trips
All students are invited to partake in an educational music experience. Students that are struggling in class because of absences, will have to stay on campus with another teacher to study and make up missed assignments. Parents should submit a student acknowledgement form prior to the event. All parents are welcome to chaperone after online orientation, a background check, and volunteering at school. Please see Ms. Macias for more information on chaperoning.
Restroom Policy
Students have music class once a week for 45 minutes. This means students will have music 38-40 music sessions the whole school year. Students are allowed to go to the restroom on an emergency basis. I have asked all homeroom teachers to take them prior to music class.
Classroom Management
Instruction on Carpet: Students are seated in assigned numbered colored squares. When asking students to respond to a question, student is selected in a random draw from a bucket that contains wooden popsicle sticks that are numbered and colored accordingly. Students are also assigned partners to work with; partners are seated next to each other in the same row (ex. Red 1+Red2/Red 3+Red 4/etc.).
Instruction in Circle: Students make a circle by standing and walking row by row.
Materials: Students stand row by row to get their materials from a table in the back. When finished with assignment, students return supplies and written work to that table accordingly.
Behavior Expectations: Students have three rules: be respectful, be a team player, and do your best. Students not meeting expectations will receive (1) Verbal Warning. If behavior continues, (2) student is removed from class activity and sits in the red chair for cool off/thinking time. If behavior persists, (3) the students receive a call to inform them of student behavior. If behavior persist, (4) teacher holds a parent meeting. If behavior persist, (5) student receives a referral and is removed from classroom into the office until escorted back to class.
Rewards: Students have 7 questions on the board that they use in class to enhance critical thinking. By asking these questions and following the rules, a Wise Owl is chosen. The Wise Owl writes their name on the door, receives a treat, sits on a comfy chair, and is the classroom helper. The whole class may also be rewarded by earning a total of 60 class points for a play/dance party.
